What happens if you’re a government contractor and you mess up? Really, really mess up?

The federal government has a number of punishments it can impose on a misbehaving contractor, and of them, debarment is one of the most serious. A debarred individual or company is listed in the Excluded Parties List System (EPLS) database, making them ineligible to receive federal contracts, federally-approved subcontracts or certain types of federal financial and non-financial assistance and benefits.

Debarments last for a set period of time after an investigation suggests wrongdoing, and often follow a contractor’s suspension.
